So long to The Warriors!

31 March 2011 No Comment

Well boppers, another riveting month of movie action has come to an end… time to turn the wheel and say a parting word or two for our beloved Warriors.  As always, we’d like to share a few nuggets of required reading for anyone looking to extend their fascination with Walter Hill’s magnum opus beyond just one month.

John Kenneth Muir’s Review of The Warriors – Mr. Muir’s smart writing gets right down to the heart of The Warriors.  His analysis compares and contrasts the film against the  true grit of pre-Giuliani New York City, and Xenophon’s Anabasis, the greek tome on which the novel and film are based.  His discussion of the themes at play in the film is so good, there was no point in writing our own.

Kicking Ass with Walter Hill: An Interview by Jon Zelazny – As people age they seem to get a bit more… candid.  As such, this interview with Walter Hill to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Warriors features the kind of no nonsense revelations of Hollywood muck that most younger and more timid directors would be afraid to discuss.  It’s required reading for anyone looking for an insight into the mind of the celebrated director.

Retracing the steps of The Warriors – Ever wish you could recreate that fateful night The Warriors had to bop their way back to Coney?  Turns out someone did, and documented every step along the way. This looks like a lot of fun for anyone with a day to spare in the Big Apple!

The Warriors Conclave: 2009 – A few years back, the surviving members of The Warriors got together for a little Q&A at their very own little convention called “Conclave 2009″.  Here’s a bit of video from their interview for convention attendees:

The Warriors Appreciation Society – Feeling like your patronage in fandom is woefully underserved?  Try joining The Warriors Appreciation Society!  Sure, it’s just a Facebook group, but if you “like” them, then everyone else will know you “like” them too and the whole world will live in harmony.  It’s just that simple.

WarriorsMovie.Co.Uk – This extensive collection of film related memorabilia is more than the touch point for fans of The Warriors on the internet, it’s the ideal place to discuss and detail the complex legacy of the film, read the original script and get a peak at deleted scenes and lost soundtrack elements.  Purely a labor of love… and an enduring one at that.

The Remake – Why are we so sure you won’t forget the legacy of the original Warriors film?  Because in 2010 Tony Scott (brother of Ridley, director of films like Top Gun) announced he was developing a remake from a script written by Terence Winter (writer/director of numerous episodes of The Sopranos).  Look, it will either come down one way or the other – the film will be a successful retread of a familiar property re-imagined for the age of tomorrow OR it will be so bad that the original film will look like the work of a Rembrandt (get it?).  Whatever the case, in the hands of Tony Scott it’s sure to feature copious shots from a variety of cameras and lots of color correction combined with quick editing.  While we’re not entirely sure how we feel about the move, at least people will be talking about the original film again, which is fine by us!

So long Warriors and thanks for the memories!
