Symphony for Destruction: Our Playlist for Godzilla’s Rampage

27 February 2011 No Comment

So, what kind of music does your imaginary Godzilla magnum-opus feature?  Nope, not an entire Blue Oyster Cult album.

We present to you our imaginary sountrack for the greatest Godzilla film that never was:

If someone told me Justice wasn’t influenced by Akira Ifukube’s iconic score, I wouldn’t believe ‘em. This song belongs in the Tron battle sequence of our Godzilla: Imaginary Edition.  The battle would inevitably involve lasers and Dino-Riders.

Because you know all that rampage gives Godzilla “Dirty Fingernails.”

Japanese singer Chara would produce an excellent version of the Mothra Song. We would even use The Social Network technology and have her play both twins. Her song “Yellow Balloon” would work well under a rockabilly beach cook-out scene. Early in the film… before all the, you know, death and stuff.

Ahh! Godzilla is coming! and everyone is running… to the sounds of Devo!

What’s that surfacing out on the water?  It must be one of Godzilla’s greatest foes, and for that one of the grungiest grunge songs to ever grunge the grunge scene in the grungy 90s: Silverchair with “Israel’s Son.”  I don’t know how a song can wear flannel, but I think this one is.

The battle between Godzilla and his old foe begins!  We cut between footage of ensuing carnage and the military efforts on the ground.  While the monster is distracted, a clandestine group is keying in the codes for a devastating gamma ray blast.

Both Godzilla and foe continue to fight!  The record scratches and Beck’s “Gamma Ray” takes over, soon our clandestine group of heroes are blasting his foe with powerful gamma rays.  Uh oh!  Looks like Godzilla has been hit too!

Sad music elicits a Pavlovian response. Poor Godzilla. He fought the good fight, but he died. Or did he? As the strings swell, what’s that?! Godzilla gets up! HE GETS UP!!!! YES!

Sure this song is forever tainted by M.I.A., but it would fit soooo wellll!

Godzilla is still weak, but the country can rebuild.  The big green guy is shipped at great expense (and danger!) to Mothra’s island, where the twins are asked to sing a song of healing. Winklevoss Chara sings an excellent, stirring rendition of the Mothra’s prayer song… not unlike our favorite version of the song Sacred Springs, composed by none other than Akira Ifukube.  This scene is heartbreaking.  Seriously,… you’d need tape.

Godzilla rises and slowly ambles back into the water. The world is safe again thanks to our protector.

Now back to the good times! FYI, we would watch ANY movie that closed with Babe Ruth’s “The Mexican.”
